Plot

In 2017, a mysterious virus has turned much of Earth’s population into mindless and aggressive monsters called “Freakers.” As the nation collapses, various factions seize swaths of land, imposing their own rules. Outside of these self-managed governments live vagrants, mercenaries and bounty hunters who stay out of the sight of power. One of them is Deacon St. John, a former military man who roams the highways of the Pacific Northwest, trying to survive in a hostile environment. When he learns that his long-thought wife Sarah might still be alive, he sets out on a journey to reunite with her.

Open world survival game

DG’s action takes place in the Pacific Northwest , a region of the United States known for its forests and mountainous areas. The player will be able to explore most of the region with open world mechanics. By exploring abandoned houses and other locations, the player will find various resources necessary to survive in the harsh conditions of the post-apocalyptic environment. With these resources, the player can make objects or repair weapons. The player has the option of using melee weapons or various types of firearms. You can also use explosives like Molotov cocktails and proximity bombs.

Man’s Best Friend

The world of Days Gone is immense, and navigating it on foot would be a difficult task even for a seasoned survivor like Deacon. That is why the player moves around the map on a motorcycle. The vehicle, like other items on the St. John team, can be upgraded. This allows the player to increase their durability and maneuverability, among others. The motorcycle also serves as an inventory where the player can store all the necessary objects.

Enemies

An important feature of Days Gone are its enemies . Freakers are aggressive and violent, and often move in massive hordes. They are divided into several categories based on their speed and strength. Freakers behave differently during the day than at night, when they become more aggressive and chase the player in groups. In addition to the Freakers, the player will encounter human enemies: other vagabonds, mercenaries, local militias, and remnants of the army. The player can choose how to approach encounters with these enemies: sneak in or kill them silently through stealth.

Reception

Days Gone was received mostly positively by critics. Critics praised the game’s varied gameplay, which incorporated stealth and open combat in equal measure. The mechanics of the enemies were also highlighted, especially the hordes of zombies and the different behaviors of the Freakers during the night and the day. Another critically praised feature was the survival aspect, which forced players to carefully consider spending limited resources.
